The Addington Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1913

The Addington Golf Club: Don't be fooled by the ageing clubhouse and one or two early impressions of a course that you might think time forgot. As you come to the blind drive at the 8th and the dangerous carry onto the 9th green, you should be well and truly under Abercromby's spell and the excellence of his layout here at The Addington.

The back-9 has a wonderful collection of holes, not least the magnificent long par-3 13th. Many wooden footbridges will ease your way around this undulating, but not overly tiring course.

Although only a par-68 from the visitors tees, the par-4s are plenty long enough, the six par-3s are very good, and only the concern for some golfers may be the absence of a full compliment of par-5s. Arguably one of the best hidden gems inside the M25 and within a shortish drive from central London.

Pick of the holes: the long par-3 13th takes some beating ... see our "Did You Know" section below. And be careful of the greenside bunker at the par-4 6th (DYK below also refers).

Did you know?

The Addington's par-4 6th hole was made famous in the writings of P.G. Wodehouse (British author and humourist), who must have been "trapped" for quite some time there. He penned "anyone wishing to write to the author should address all correspondence to: P.G. Wodehouse, c/o the 6th bunker, The Addington Golf Club, Croydon, Surrey."

The acclaimed golfing writer and former Addington member Henry Longhurst described the 230-yard par-3 13th as "with the exception of the 5th at Pine Valley, near Philadelphia, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf". The 16th is also included in his all time great golf holes.

Published ranking

England's 36th best course (Golf World, 2023).
Britain & Ireland's 88th best course (Golf World, 2022).

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
