Abridge Golf & Country Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1964

Abridge Golf & Country Club: There are those who say the only really good golf course in the county of Essex is Thorndon Park. The members of, and visitors to Abridge are likely to disagree. Here at Abridge the legendary Henry Cotton has created a fine layout in a pleasant rural setting.

A variety of dog-legging and straight holes, defended by occasional water hazards and excellent bunkering, have been skilfully laid out over gently, though continually undulating terrain.

The proximity of the busy M25 motorway throws in a bit of traffic noise on a few holes, but not enough to spoil your enjoyment of this very good parkland course. Most of the time you'll be playing in rural peace and quiet, and admiring scenic views over the picturesque Essex countryside.

Several elevated greens on the opening holes will ensure your approach play and short game is tested early on. A well maintained layout that always provides a good test for your shot-making and all-round game in a pleasantly rural setting.

Did you know?

Abridge is a course used for Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship.

Naming the golf club back in the early 1960s was not a straightforward matter for the sponsors, Committee and members. The course straddles the rural parishes of Theydon Mount and Theydon Garnon and comes within the judicial jurisdiction of Epping. The Club's postal address is Stapleford Tawney, which is equidistant from Passingford Bridge and Abridge. The sponsors had no lack of ideas for the name, with early favourites being Theydon Mount and South Essex. These were eventually rejected, being too easily confused with existing Clubs, and finally Abridge emerged as a clear winner.
