TPC Scottsdale (Stadium course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1986

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium course): Few of America's impressive network of Tournament Players Clubs are home to such exuberant excitement as is seen each year on TPC Scottsdale's Stadium course. When the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open comes to town, so do record numbers of golf fans. The legendary par-3 16th, for one week a year, is surrounded by up to 30,000 frenzied fans, who create one of professional golf's unique sporting spectacles.

Originally a flat piece of arid, dusty terrain, Weiskopf and Morrish transformed this corner of the Sonoran desert into a wonderfully sculpted golf course. Plenty of desert areas still separate the pristine fairways, while huge earthmounds also define the well-groomed holes.

There's plenty to think about on your way round, with desert scrub and ball-grabbing rough bordering the not overly wide fairways. A posse of bunkers come into play on most of the holes (although not at the par-4 first). If navigating your way round this challenging course gets too much, then there's always the chance to stop and absorb the ever-present views onto the rugged McDowell Mountain range.

When you play here, things are likely to be distinctly quieter than during the legendary Phoenix Open. But the 16th, and many other holes, will still have the nerves tingling as you tee it up. The most memorable holes come on the closing stretch, where water is also more in evidence, especially at the risk-reward island-green par-5 15th and skirting the left side of the 17th green and 18th fairway.

Stay&Play at TPC Scottsdale: luxury accommodation is available at the Fairmont and Marriott hotels (see Where2Stay section below).
