Just across Midland Road, and under common ownership, is the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club. Mid Pines is another Donald Ross layout, and the first course to be built in the Knollwood area, between Pinehurst and Southern Pines. It is an 18-hole par-72 Championship course measuring 6723 yards from the back tees.

From the Pinehurst traffic circle (intersection of the US-15-501, 211 and 2) follow the 2-East (Midland Rd) direction Southern Pines. After 3.6 miles turn left into Pine Needles entrance. After o.3 miles golf parking is on your right.

Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club: If there's a golf course to challenge Pinehurst No.2 for top honours in North Carolina, then Pine Needles is surely one of the leading contenders. This is another fabulous Donald Ross layout, always presented in excellent condition, although in a way that does not detract from the course's innate naturalness.
As with many Sandhills layouts, the gently undulating terrain and abundance of pine forest, gives each hole its own unique identity. With tall majestic pines, dogwoods and magnolias lining most of the good-width fairways, the course winds it way out-and-back again to the clubhouse, taking in much unspoilt woodland scenery along the way. Most holes are visually impressive, although don't always expect to see the landing area for your drives, especially on some holes where you need to hit up-and-over the ridgeback fairway.
It's around the greens where your game will be tested most thoroughly. The usually large, fast and subtly sloping putting surfaces are often flanked by severe run-offs and deep, grassy-faced bunkering. Characteristic of older courses, the distance between greens and tees is short, in some cases the back of the green flowing into the next tee-box ... a walker's paradise!
Water is rarely in play at Pine Needles, but it does put in a significant appearance in front of the tee-boxes on the wonderful par-3 3rd and the fabulous uphill par-5 10th. Big, expansive and bearing the design hallmarks of a master craftsman, this is a course to enthral and challenge every step of the way.

Following the success of their new Mid Pines course (opened in 1921), the Tufts family (founders of the Pinehurst village, resort and hotel) decided the Knollwood area, between Pinehurst and Southern Pines, was ready for a second golf course, and a new luxury hotel. Donald Ross designed the course, which opened along with the hotel in 1927. The hotel was later sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, and is still in use today as the St Joseph's of the Pines extended care facility.
In the early 1950's the golf course was acquired by a group that included the Cosgrove family (who then owned Mid Pines), and the Bell family, who now own Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Southern Pines. Peggy Kirk Bell became a renowned teacher in the sport of golf, establishing the Golfaris method for improving your game and having fun.
Under Peggy Bell's direction, Pine Needles also became a major supporter of women's golf over the years. It hosted the US Women's Open championship in 1996, 2001, 2007 and again in 2022 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Pine Needles).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
Here at Prince’s Golf Club you'll find 27 excellent holes of links golf. Just over the fence and sharing similar terrain is Royal St George’s; but Prince’s is far from overshadowed by its venerable neighbour. The three nine-hole loops at Prince's, laid out over gently undulating terrain, are sure to bring a smile of satisfaction to all lovers of links golf.
