Where2Golf says:
Lost Canyons Golf Club (Sky course): Driving into the foothills of the Susana Mountain range from Simi Valley, you'll get some inkling of the dramatic topography and stunning scenery that awaits at Lost Canyons. Stepping onto either the Sky or Shadow courses will confirm your earlier suspicions: both these courses are going to deliver a wonderfully natural, challenging and immensely exciting golf experience. With a complete absence of housing, you can enjoy the full beauty and tranquillity of the tightly folding hills and canyons through which these Dye/Couples designed courses weave their spectacular way. The Sky course, laid out on the north side of Lost Canyons Drive, is full of wonderful elevation changes with many holes laid out along the canyon ridge lines, others plunging into the valleys below. For first-timers here, some of the drives will look fearsome, with pronounced elevation changes, a few tightest fairways and plenty of bunkering along the fairways and around the greens. Perhaps taking its cue from the rugged hillside surroundings, the standard of maintenance here is good, without being immaculate. With so many excellent golf holes on both the nine-hole loops, Dye still finds a way to produce a thrilling finish. The fabulous par-3 17th (Hawk's Bluff) requires a medium iron, hit to a long, thin sliver of green, which balances on the edge of the canyon. The plunging and nicely dog-legging par-4 18th (Lookout Point) is another challenging hole beautifully framed by the canyon scenery.

Lost Canyons, located just north of the Simi Valley, is sitauted in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains. The range runs east-west, with the San Fernando and Simi Valleys to its south. Pico Canyon, in the north-east of the range (and less than 10 miles from Lost Canyons, as the crow flies), was home to the first oil discovery in California. In 1876, Charles Mentry brought in California's first commercially viable oil well. His Pico oil works were eventually folded into John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Co. of California (Chevron). Production from the well didn't stop until 1990, making the 114-year old Pico No.4 the longest continually producing oil well in the world. Today the well is a National Historic Landmark. The neighbouring town of Mentryville is maintained as an oil "ghost town".
