San Francisco GC
San Francisco Golf Club: This private golf club (exclusive to its members and their invited guests) is home to one of California's finest golf courses. At times relatively open, at other times more tree-lined, stylish bunkering lines the fairways and often surrounds the not overly large, but lightning fast greens.
Devoid of water hazards, there are plenty of other golfing challenges that ensure Tillinghast's design gives every part of your game a thorough workout. A highly rated layout that is routinely included in the top 50 of America's 100 greatest courses.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Good
The course at San Francisco Golf Club was designed by one of America's legendary golf course architects, Albert Warren "Tilly" Tillinghast. Born in Philadelphia in 1874, Tillinghast was the son of Benjamin Collins Tillinghast, the owner of a rubber goods company.
Tillinghast-designed courses, such as Bethpage State Park, Baltusrol, San Francisco and Winged Foot, have hosted countless top-level professional golf events. Whereas the "East Coast" courses mentioned above have each held a profusion of major championships, the headline event at San Francisco GC was the 1974 Curtis Cup, in which the USA's top eight amateur women beat their Gt Britain & Ireland opponents by 13 pts to 5.
California's 5th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 33rd best course (Golf Digest, 2023).
World's 38th best course (GOLF Magazine, 2023/24).
The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).
Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
