Silverado Resort & Spa (North course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1955

Silverado Resort & Spa (North course): Set among the gently rolling hills of Napa Valley's wine country, Silverado comprises two excellent, parkland style, championship courses - the North and South. Both make use of occasional elevation changes, although they mainly occupy flatter terrain where there is a pleasant mix of more open and at other times distinctly more tree-lined holes. Houses unobtrusively flank one or two of the holes, although not to obscure the picturesque views onto the surrounding Napa Valley hills.

The North course's two out-and-back nine-hole loops, much utltised by the PGA Tour, present several tightish holes, where your tee shots will need to safely find the fairways if you are to score well. The rough beyond the fairways is not overly penal, but many varieties of trees may block your line to the green if tee shots are hit too far offline. Stylish though relatively shallow bunkering threatens on several holes, especially around the greens, while your course management and shot-making will need to factor-in ponds protecting the par-3 11th and par-3 15th holes.

With one or two vineyards to be glimpsed along the way, the North course at Silverado provides a pleasant parkland setting in which to enjoy a relaxed round of golf. On a layout where many of the game's greatest golfing legends scooped the prizes in the 1970s, you can set your own level of difficulty, easier-going from the front tees, considerably more "interesting" from the tips.

Did you know?

Silverado has hosted many top level golf events, not least the PGA Tour's Kaiser International/Anheuser-Busch Classic between 1968 and 1980, the Champion's Tour Transamerica tournament (1989 - 2002), and more recently the PGA Tour's Safeway Open. The PGA Tour are generally hosted on the North course, the Champions Tour on the South course. (See our Tournaments section > by venue > Silverado).

Standing at the centre of the Silverado Resort is the original stately, white-pillared mansion built in the early 1870s and originally home to General John Franklin Miller. Born in 1831, Miller was a lawyer, businessman, and a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He represented California in the United States Senate from 1881 until his death in 1886.

Silverado is a hybrid Spanish-English word, formerly used to indicate a place where silver is found, a similar concept to El Dorado, which came to mean any place where gold, jewels and great wealth could be rapidly acquired.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
