Crécy Golf Club (Domaine de la Brie)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1987

Located in the Domaine de la Brie, Crécy Golf Club has recently acquired a wonderful new championship layout, courtesy of Arnold Palmer Design. The very pleasant but less challenging Montpichet course, a respectable parkland course measuring 6038 m from the tips, has been somewhat eclipsed by its newly arrived companion - the Vignoly course.

Laid out on gently undulating, but not overly tiring terrain, this is a full-blooded championship layout and one of the best modern designs to be built around Paris in recent times. Palmer's well-crafted layout is accompanied by plenty of rock- and reed-lined water hazards, threatening bunkering at every turn and slick run-off areas around several greens.

The picturesque setting, with views out onto partly wooded hills and the rural countryside of the Marne Valley, is complemented by the course's generally open, rolling character.

Among many excellent holes, the uphill, short par-4 9th even evokes something of a links-style feel, with the flagstick proudly reaching skywards at the top of the hill.

Big-hitters will enjoy the good-width fairways of the front-nine, although things do tighten up on the slightly more compact back-nine, not least at the back-to-back short par-4 14th and 15th holes. The course certainly lays down an excellent challenge to established players, and with five sets of tees to choose from, can also be enjoyed by less experienced golfers.

Did you know?

Crécy Golf Club does not take its name from the famous Battle of Crecy, which was fought in 1346 at Crécy-en-Ponthieu, about 80km south of Calais. The battle saw the 35,000 knights, men at arms and crossbowmen of Philip VI of France, defeated by the 15,000 knights, men at arms, longbowmen and spearmen of Edward III of England.

As one of the most important battles of the Hundred Years' War, its was noted for the introduction of new weapons and tactics and many would say marked the beginning of the end of classic chivalry in battle. The Golf Club takes its name from the neighbouring market town of Crécy-la-Chapelle, with its famous 13th century gothic church.
