Barlassina Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1956

Barlassina Country Club: Together with Biella (Le Betulle) and Torino (La Mandria), Barlassina is part of a wonderful triumvirate of Italian parkland golf courses designed by Englishman, John Morrison.

In its splendidly quiet and rural setting, here is a layout that oozes style and quality; a thoroughbred parkland classic in every sense. Although relatively flat, with only a few undulating holes, the elegance of Morrison's design would not be out of place in a Milan fashion house, or in the sleek lines of a new Ferrari.

The avenues of mature trees, some straight, others gently dog-legging, combine with stylish fairway and greenside bunkering to provide the essential ingredients. Water is not a threat on any of Barlassina's holes, and with generally good-width fairways and not overly penal rough between the nicely spaced holes, you'll have the opportunity to card a good score - providing you stay out of the trees and the bunkers.

Big hitters may thirst for a bit more length on some holes, but for the vast majority of golfers, Barlassina's appeal lies more in its charm and top-quality presentation, than its ability to overwhelm and humble.

As with most of Milan's top golf courses, the large and comfortable clubhouse is home to a restaurant where the best of Italian cuisine is effortlessly prepared.

Barlassina is one of the later design's of British golf course architect, John Stanton Fleming Morrison (1892 - 1961). Working together with Charles Alison and Harry Colt, the firm of Colt, Alison and Morrison was responsible for designing many great courses in the British Isles and around the world. Morrison carried the firm's banner into Continental Europe.

In addition to Barlassina, Morrison's work in Italy also includes the design of Biella (Le Betulle) and the courses at Torino Golf Club (La Mandria). In his younger years Morrison was a talented all-round sportsman, representing England at football and playing first-class cricket. During World War I he joined the Royal Flying Corps and won both British and Italian medals for valour, flying stringbag bombers in Italy.
