From Rome's ring road (the Grande Raccordo Anulare-GRA), in the north of Rome, take exit 6, and follow direction Roma center on the Via Flaminia. After 3 km comes the difficult bit (via Due Ponti is the key!). Stay in the right-hand lane and follow the sign Roma Tor di Quinto/via Due Ponti (do not take the left-hand split, direction Flaminio-Corso di Francia). After tunnel, again stay in right hand lane and follow direction via Due Ponti (do not bear left direction Roma/Stadio). After bend, keep in right-hand lane (ignore the left turn) and stay on the via Due Ponti for 1.5 km to golf entrance on your right.

Parco di Roma Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2000

Parco di Roma Golf Club: The city of Rome may have been laid out on seven hills, but so, it may feel, was P.B. Dye's very dramatic and ambitious design at Parco di Roma. The Club's master-plan mapped out three 18-hole courses, of which only the first exists to-date.

The current layout, comprising 18 of the intended 54 holes, would apportion ten of the existing holes to Course 1, four to Course 2, and four to Course 3. This may explain why the current layout feels a little disjointed at times, and occupies some distinctly different environments.

Nearest to the clubhouse, the parkland-style par-4 1st, 16th and 17th, and the par-5 18th occupy the flattest terrain. A steep climb from the 1st to the 2nd hole brings you to a higher and markedly more open plateau.

Once you've navigated the twisting par-4 3rd, with its testing drive over a wide tree-lined ravine, you arrive at the dramatic "middle" section of the course. From the long par-5 4th through to the par-4 12th you'll be tested and entertained by many innovatively crafted holes, substantial elevation changes and a vast and varied array of bunkering.

The very testing closing duo are tightly wrapped alongside a small lake, which runs from tee-to-green on both holes. This is the only water you'll encounter on the course, which as with many P.B. Dye designs, is not one for the faint-hearted.

On your first outing the imaginative design, the constant undulations and often mesmerising greens, may feel a touch overwhelming. But the more you play this course the more you may grow to accept its unique and quirky challenges, while enjoying many fine views from the higher elevations.
