Circolo del Golf di Roma Acquasanta

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1903

Circolo del Golf di Roma Acquasanta: As in many countries, healthy debate rages as to which golf club is Italy's oldest. Established in 1889, Florence Golf Club (now Ugolino Firenze) lays claim to this title. But Rome Golf Club, which set-up on its Acquasanta site in 1903, would point to 1885 as the actual date the Club was founded, thus making it the country's oldest. Leaving this debate to one side, there is no doubting the old-style charm and sense of history that surrounds Rome Golf Club Acquasanta.

Perhaps lacking sufficient length to satisfy all today's biggest-hitters, this very pleasant, rolling parkland layout, has stood the test of time, and still provides golfers of all levels with a thorough and enjoyable examination. The rise and fall of the course, as it follows the natural contours of this surprisingly rural environment (you are less than 5 km from Rome's centre!), constantly demands good course management and skilful shot-making.

The sometimes narrow and often gently sweeping fairways are lined, although never too densely, with attractive mediterranean pines, eucalyptus and cypresses. Relatively light bunkering is deployed around the usually small and circular greens, which, like the rest of the course, are excellently maintained.

In addition to the pleasant rural countryside around the course, which is also home to several ancient constructions (not least the aqueduct), farther into the distance you look onto a scenic array of villages, hills and mountains.

Did you know?

Roma Acquasanta has hosted many top level tournaments in its time, including the Italian Open Championship in 1950 and 1980 (see our Tournaments section > by Venue > Rome GC).

The Club's name makes reference to the network of aqueducts that supplied Ancient Rome with its water requirements. Built between 312 B.C. (AquaAppia) and 226 A.D. (Aqua Alexandrina) it has been calculated that in imperial times, when the city's population was well over a million, the distribution system could provide each inhabitant with more fresh water than we generally use nowadays.

For most of their length the early aqueducts were simply channels bored through the rock, the depth of the channel maintaining a shallow gradient throughout the length of the aqueduct. Only in the final stretches was the conduit raised on arches, to give a sufficient head for distribution of water within the city. You will get a good view of the remains of one such aqueduct when you play the par-5 7th hole.
