Country Club Castelgandolfo

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1988

Country Club Castelgandolfo: The jewels of this wonderful Stay&Play venue are Castelgandolfo's 17th century palatial clubhouse and an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, and neatly contained within a former volcano crater. Looking down from the towering mansion, the lightly tree-lined, parkland course is handsomely laid out before you.

The two nine-hole loops quickly descend into the bowl of the volcano crater, ensuring most of the course occupies relatively flat or gently sloping terrain. The only climbing you'll do is coming back up towards the mansion at the 9th and 18th holes. A few deep breaths may be needed before the toughest ascent, from the 18th green back to the stately clubhouse.

The parkland environment here is mainly open, with a liberal scattering of olive, pine and cypress trees. The bunkering, in true RTJ fashion, is stylish and plentiful. Two good sized lakes ensure water comes into play on at least five holes, with the par-4 4th and short risk-reward par-4 16th, threading their way between the lakes, water flanking both sides of both holes. Of the par-3s only the 7th hole brings water into play.

Picturesque villas, perched on the crater rim, look down onto the course, while the slightly more elevated 13th and 14th holes give you a panoramic view back across the course, beyond the mansion and up to the churches and castles of Castel Gandolfo village. This enjoyable and stylish layout, could perhaps benefit from slightly better maintenance, although that is perhaps the only thing to detract from its "must play when in Rome" status.

Did you know?

Castelgandolfo's clubhouse and top-quality restaurant facilities are located in a stunning 17th century mansion, which looks down onto the golf course. The palatial residence was originally built for Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1711-1771), who also carried the titles of Prince of Farnese, Duke of Ariccia and was a nephew of Fabio Chigi (Pope Alexander VII).

Castel Gandolfo itself is a pretty hill-town perched high above Lake Albano (Lago di Albano), and is the location of the Pope's summer residence. Castel Gandolfo is one of the Castelli Romani, historic towns dotted around the wooded Alban Hills, which is dominated by grand villas.

Castelgandolfo Golf has hosted many top level tournaments, including the European Tour on two occasions (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Castelgandolfo).

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
