Coombe Hill Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1911

Coombe Hill Golf Club: this aristocrat amongst the capital's golf clubs, is located just to the west of the A3 trunk road into London, with near neighbour Royal Wimbledon Golf Club to the east. Set in a predominantly woodland environment, the properties beyond the course (very rarely in view) are distinctly high-end!

Exuding a quintessentially English wooded heathland persona, the course is blessed with a collection of superb par-3 holes, as befits one of London's elite. Plenty of golfing challenge is contained within the layout's undulating holes. Usually excellent upkeep also contributes to the appeal of this excellently-crafted Abercromby design.

Did you know?

Completed in the early part of the 1900s, the golf course designs of John Frederick "Aber" Abercromby are much revered amongst golf aficianados. Although not as prolific a designer as the likes of Harry Colt, James Braid and Tom Simpson, four courses around London provide a compelling testament to the excellence and thoroughness of Abercromby's design skills.

These Abercromby exemplars are: The Addington, which he founded and where he lived for many years as the club's "benevolent dictator"; Coombe Hill, where he conducted an initial site inspection by hot air balloon; Knole Park, near Sevenoaks, and Worplesdon, one of the revered three W's (with Woking and West Hill).

Published ranking

England's 87th best course (Golf World, 2023).
Britain & Ireland's 198th best course (Golf World, 2022).
