Knole Park Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1924

Knole Park Golf Club is home to a wonderfully scenic and thoroughly absorbing parkland course. Here, alongside stately Knole House, you'll experience a memorable "deerpark adventure" as you journey round ... waving a herd of grazing deer from the first tee might be your first task.

In its wonderfully natural setting, Knole Park offers beautiful vistas not only of the park itself, but also of the impressively large 500-year-old Knole House. The excellent and ever-undulating John Abercromby layout winds its way through Knole Park's 1,000 acres of glorious parkland, home to one of the finest deer herds in the south east of England.

After a tricky few opening holes, which feel quite tight and wooded in character, the par-4 6th takes you up to the expansively open terrain of these former hunting grounds. The excellent greens here are not overly large, and often elevated. And don't be caught out by a small number of small ponds, which lurk alongside holes like the downhill par-3 8th, and on your approach to the 18th green.

Several footpaths run through the property, so on busier days you'll need to be mindful of, and give way to walkers on a few holes. But this aside, you'll be free to roam the good-width fairways and soak in the splendour of this natural setting, framed by its ancient oaks, ferns and fescues, and open grazing lands. There's also some lovely North Downs views to enjoy beyond the course, particulalrly on the closing stretch.

Pick of the holes: the relatively short uphill par-4 13th captures the spirit of Knole Park, as much as any other hole. Played, of course, to an elevated green, it offers sumptuous parkland views from tee and green, with an ancient hollowed-out oak adding to the timeless feel of this hole.

Did you know?

Knole Park is the home club of Sam King (1911-2003), who served as the club's professional for 31 years, and who counts three Ryder Cup appearances (1937, '47 and '49) amongst his many achievements.

In the centre of Knole Park sits Knole House, a huge country house with a host of architectural features, lavish interiors and a 26-acre walled garden. As a National Trust property, Knole House and its grounds and gardens are open to the public. From 1603, Thomas Sackville made "Knole" the aristocratic treasure house for the Sackville family, who were prominent and influential in court circles. Knole's showrooms were designed to impress visitors and to display the Sackville family’s wealth and status ... which they admirably do to this day.
