Golf in Belgium
This country profile highlights some of the key aspects of golfing in Belgium.
About the Country
Although a small country by many standards, Belgium's role as host to the European Parliament and European Commission makes it one of the key locations in Europe. The big cities of Brussels and Antwerp buzz with culture and entertainment, but throughout the land the much heralded (and drunk) Belgian beers, and the classic "moules and frites" can be readily acquired.
About the Golf Golf architect Tom Simpson had a big hand in establishing golf in Belgium in the early part of the 20th century, designing 4 out of the first 5 courses to be built. These early courses, and a few others established in the 1930's, allowed the aristocracy and nouveau riche to indulge their appetite for the internationally expanding pastime of golf many of these early courses were given their Royal titles. With one or two notable exceptions (e.g. Royal Waterloo) the building of newer courses did not really get under way until the 1980's.
Golf Good Points At week-ends early tee times are often possible - Belgians preferring to tee-off at a reasonable hour (at least after 9:00).
Less Good Points Belgium does seem to get more than its fair-share of Europe's rainfall, so winter golf can sometimes get a bit boggy
Golf - Booking Always phone in advance to make a tee time booking.
Weather Apart from some snowfalls that can occur from December until February, golf is usually not a problem at anytime of year. However, winter conditions can be heavy-going, especially if it is a particularly wet winter.
Getting around Belgium is a small country - five other countries are within a two drive of the capital, Brussels. Motorways criss-cross the country so getting around by road is usually not a problem. Golf courses are often well-signposted - with the exception of a few "Royals" that seem to want to remain hidden.
