Golf in England Map

Once described by some well-meaning American visitors as a theme park strong on heritage. Maybe they were correct in some respects, but this former imperial powerhouse still has plenty to offer besides pomp and circumstance. Best advice for visitors is to spend only a small time in London, and get out into the real countryside, visit the little villages and magnificent coastline (there's thousands of miles of it), and sample some of the warm, flat beer, the English call ale - but not too much of it.

About the Golf
Between 1880 and 1930 golf course building in England was prolific as the wealthy late Victorians and Edwardians developed a huge apetite for the recreational pastime of golf. Designers such as James Braid and Harry Colt left a legacy of fabulous links, heathland and parkland courses - some of the best in the world. Courses such as Royal Birkdale, Royal St Georges, Saunton, Wentworth, Sunningdale and The Belfry (of Ryder Cup fame) have become householf names. Add to this list many inspired newer courses and it shouldn't be difficult to find a good game of golf in most parts of England.

Golf Good Points
With a very few exceptions, all the great courses are open to visitors. Golf is playable year-round.

Less Good Points
Too many clubs still do not take credit cards for green fees; some clubs are rather "stuffy" with secretaries and members who can be a tad wary of visitors. Some clubs can be very quiet at weekends, but still to not permit visitors.

Golf - Booking
Always phone in advance to make a tee time booking. Sometimes a deposit or a confirmation fax will be requested.

Weather
Not too bad for golf throughout the year; the fairer weather should be in evidence between April and October. Play during the winter months (November - March) is usually not a problem. Changeable weather is the norm - any week will contain both sun and rain - the big question is in what proportions !

Getting around
Very good road system, with many motorways linking different parts of the country. Locations are generally well-signposted, but golf clubs are often not. Buy a copy of the AA Big Road Atlas Britain (it shows the golf courses).
