Golf in
This country profile highlights some of the key aspects of golfing in .
About the Country
One of the most beautiful and romantic countries in Europe. World reknowned for Scotch whisky, and for its colourful and sometimes tempestuous people (known as Scots, not Scotch). The Scottish clans and tartans, the scenic coastline, the rugged mountains and the leafy glens all contribute to an unforgettable place to visit - and then of course, there is the golf !
About the Golf
Most historians would point to Scotland as the home of golf. The Dutch may also lay claim to this honour, but in terms of where the game took hold and developed into the world-game we know today, then Scotland's claim is undisputed. Some golfing tracks, though perhaps not today's exact layouts, were in use 500 hundred years ago. Links golf, next to the sea and played near to and over the sand dunes, is what we most associate Scotland with, but in locations such as Gleneagles, Blairgowrie, Loch Lomond, Downfield and a host of others, there are also some exquisite inland courses.
Golf Good Points
With a few very exceptions, clubs are very welcoming to visitors, both men and women.
Less Good Points
A few clubs are somewhat stuck in another century and are less than accomodating to women players, with separate facilities or (in the case of one notable club) women not allowed to play on the championship course.
Golf - Booking
Always phone in advance to make a tee time booking. Sometimes a deposit or a confirmation fax will be requested.
Weather
Best months are May - October, but inclement weather could come along at just about anytime. Winters tend to be quite cold with snow possible (especially in northern Scotland). However, many a golfer will tell you about the time they played at St Andrews on New Year's day in glorious winter sunshine !
Getting around
Generally good roads which are far less congested than they are south of the border (in England). Getting off the main roads onto the back ways can be great fun and very scenic, but you'll need to add extra time.
Accomodation
Many stately homes and quite a few castles have been converted into hotels. Johanssens Guide is one place to find them. Much cheaper are B&B's (bed and breakfasts) which can also be excellent.
