Golf in Wales

This country profile highlights some of the key aspects of golfing in Wales.

Wales

About the Country
This rugged and often breathtakingly beautiful country, though firmly attached to England, is culturally and idealogically very much its own master. The Welsh language has recently been making a resurgence as road signs and various public notices will testify. Golf itself is a popular game in Wales - not just because of Woosy - but the real passion is still saved for rugby.

About the Golf
The best golf is always close to the coast or more often, right next to the sea. Legendary courses such as Royal Porthcawl, Aberdovey and Pennard match the best there are, while newer courses such as St Pierre and Celtic Manor have made spectacular new entrances to the golfing scene.

Golf Good Points
All the great venues are open to visitors. Green fees are often quite inexpensive.

Less Good Points
Difficult to be critical here - usually a great pleasure to golf in Wales.

Golf - Booking
Always phone in advance to make a tee time booking. Sometimes a deposit or a confirmation fax will be requested.

Weather
Apart from some snowfalls that can occur from December until February, golf is usually not a problem at anytime of year. However, winter conditions can be heavy-going, especially if it is a particularly wet winter.

Getting around
Very easy in the south of Wales with the M4 motorway connecting many golf destinations. Travelling around much of the rest of Wales can be slower, especially where smaller roads wind their way through the beautiful hills and mountains.

Accomodation
For an excellent guide to Wales' "Hotels of Distinction" there is an excellent book called Welsh Rarebits - the Welsh Gold collection. Johansens Guide also contains many good addresses.
