Where2Golf says:

Lakewood Golf Club: Marriott's Grand Hotel in Point Clear, boasts two 18-hole championship golf courses (known collectively as Lakewood Golf Club), which are included as part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. Compared to its Lakewood companion (the Dogwood course), the Azalea is the stronger layout, with slightly more undulating terrain (particularly on the back-nine), very impressive bunkering, and a more natural setting - all closely aligned with the high-quality standards of the other Trail courses.

On the Azalea's out-and-back layout, you will become immersed in an environment of centuries old oaks, dazzling azaleas (when in flower) and occasional swamp that skirts a few holes, guards some greens or cuts a dash across one or two fairways. The generally good-width fairways have less housing in view than on the Dogwood course, and are spaced well apart, enhancing the individuality of each hole.

With water or marshy swamp in play on several occasions, and not overly large greens full of subtle slopes and borrows, each part of your game will be probed and scrutinised. Three long, well-bunkered par-4's bring this memorable course to its conclusion, perhaps made more memorable if you take a moment to look into the Confederate cemetery to the left of the 18th tee.

At this Stay & Play venue, the on-site accommodation is located close to the golf facilities.

Did you know?

A modest hotel existed on the site of the Grand Hotel as early as 1820. By 1847 the first Grand Hotel was constructed, and so its long history began. During the Civil War the hotel became a Confederate hospital and 300 soldiers were laid to rest in the Confederate Cemetery (which is alongside the 18th tee of the Azalea course). The hotel has been rebuilt and enlarged several times, not least after fire in 1869, following a steam-ship that exploded at the hotel pier (with great loss of life) in 1871, and after its decline and demolition in the 1930's. An 18-hole golf course appeared just after WWII, with an extra nine-holes being built in the late 1960's and nine more in the late 1980's, and so today the Lakewood Golf Club at the Grand Hotel can boast 36-holes of championship golf. Prior to Marriott's ownership, the Grand Hotel was acquired by the Alabama Retirement System, and became a part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. >> ABOUT THE RTJ TRAIL (See Where2Golf.com entry for Silver Lakes - Did You Know section).
