Where2Golf says:

Lakewood Golf Club (Dogwood course): Marriott's Grand Hotel in Point Clear, boasts two 18-hole championship golf courses (known collectively as Lakewood Golf Club), which are included as part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. The opening section on the Dogwood course, starts you off in an open and flattish environment, where a small lake has to be negotiated on the par-5 1st hole. The long par-3 3rd brings you alongside the Grand Hotel and its marina, and provides the only glimpse you'll get of Mobile Bay from either of Lakewood's courses. From the par-5 5th you get into the more typically parkland surroundings of the Dogwood. This second section of front-nine holes is characterised by tall pines and discreet, single storey-dwellings flanking the fairways. Water remains a significant factor on several holes, not least the dangerously water-protected par-4 9th. Another change of scene awaits on the back-nine, where the real estate disappears, water is less present (although still threatens on two or three holes) and centuries-old, knarled oaks line the way, though never too densely. The terrain on the Dogwood course is predominantly flat and easy to walk, with a few gentle slopes and elevation changes enhancing parts of the very pleasant and park-like back-nine.

At this Stay & Play venue, the on-site accommodation is located close to the golf facilities.

Did you know?

A modest hotel existed on the site of the Grand Hotel as early as 1820. By 1847 the first Grand Hotel was constructed, and so its long history began. During the Civil War the hotel became a Confederate hospital and 300 soldiers were laid to rest in the Confederate Cemetery (which is alongside the 18th tee of the Azalea course). The hotel has been rebuilt and enlarged several times, not least after fire in 1869, following a steam-ship that exploded at the hotel pier (with great loss of life) in 1871, and after its decline and demolition in the 1930's. An 18-hole golf course appeared just after WWII, with an extra nine-holes being built in the late 1960's and nine more in the late 1980's, and so today the Lakewood Golf Club at the Grand Hotel can boast 36-holes of championship golf. Prior to Marriott's ownership, the Grand Hotel was acquired by the Alabama Retirement System, and became a part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. >> ABOUT THE RTJ TRAIL (See Where2Golf.com entry for Silver Lakes - Did You Know section).
