Where2Golf says:

RTJ Golf Trail - Oxmoor Valley (Valley course): Here at Oxmoor Valley on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, 36-holes of sumptuous championship golf await, but you'll have to decide for yourself if you prefer the more classical Valley course or the thrills-and-spills of the roller-coaster Ridge course. The Valley is an out-and-back layout that starts with a plunging descent down to the Shannon valley floor, via an excellent, slightly dog-legging par-4 and a fiercely bunkered par-3. Thereafter much of the course is played in the valley, with pleasant undulations in the terrain, although never anything too excessive. Many of Trent Jones' classic design features are to found here, not least several elevated tee-boxes allowing a good view onto the not overly wide fairways, stylish fairway bunkering and occasional small greenside pot bunkers, nicely elevated greens and a plethora of slopes and borrows to which the putting surfaces are home. Water is a real threat on about half the holes, where either a small lake hugs the fairway or protects the green (as at the excellent par-5 12th), or a meandering creek wanders across the fairway, which is the case at the equally good par-5 9th. With not a stick of real estate in sight, the Valley course offers a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging layout, while journeying through this pleasantly wooded, creekside setting. The 18th brings you back to the clubhouse, with some picturesque views onto neighbouring woods and hills.

Did you know?

Little Shades Creek (in the Shannon Valley) is the name of the creek that runs through the Valley course. >> ABOUT THE TRAIL : The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a unique collection of eleven excellent golf venues spread through the State of Alabama. Dr. David Bronner, the then CEO of the organisation that ran the Alabama state-employees pension funds, originally conceived the idea of the Trail. He was convinced that creating a top-quality golf trail would attract golfers from near and far, raise Alabama's profile and at the same time earn a good return for the pension fund monies invested in the project - the world's largest golf course building project ever undertaken. The original courses on the Trail (located at Hampton Cove, Silver Lakes, Oxmoor Valley, Capitol Hill, Grand National, Cambrian Ridge, Magnolia Grove, and Highland Oaks) were all designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened for play in 1992. Lakewood GC at Point Clear was acquired along with the Grand Hotel; its two golf courses were recently renovated and included in the Trail. Although not designed by Trent Jones, The Shoals and Ross Bridge were added to the Trail in more recent years.
