Did you know?

The club's history states that it was "founded in 1907", and clearly this is when it arrived at its current location and when Mungo Park designed the current course. Centenary celebrations were duly conducted in 2007. However, the club's history also points to a match played in Buenos Aires in 1892 between V.G.G. Scroggie and W.H. Masters, which (it is claimed) led to the formation of the Buenos Aires Golf Club. This club later became San Andrés Golf Club (the name was changed in honour of St Andrews, Scotland - the home of golf). On this basis San Andrés claims to be the oldest golf club in South America, established in 1892.

However, in terms of longevity, Lomas Athletic Club, also founded by British expats in the 1890s, started life in March 1891. Golf was part of LAC's core activities, giving it a claim to being South America's oldest golf club. The Lomas Athletic course is still in its original location, but it's not entirely clear when the course was laid out - either 1892 or 1899 seem to be possibilities.
