Arabian Ranches Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2003

Arabian Ranches Golf Club: Although two-storey villas are wrapped around most of the course perimeter here at Arabian Ranches, the layout still maintains its desert credentials and a wonderful linksy feel. Former Open Champion Ian Baker-Finch has, to his credit, crafted a hugely enjoyable and challenging golf course.

With the housing always set generously well back from the course, the preservation of large swathes of desert scrub between the individually crafted holes gives the course its essential spacious character. The two out-and-back nine-hole loops are devoid of water hazards, and there are no defined bunkers. However, sand is plentiful. Large areas of it separate the nicely contoured and tightish fairways.

On several occasions the large sandy waste areas sidle up alongside the greens ... taking on a more traditional bunker form ... especially so at the par-3s. The sand in the waste areas is generally quite soft, which gives the impression of playing from a traditional fairway bunker rather than from Arizona-style hard-pan.

There are few trees on the course, but small bushes feature in the sandy waste areas ... home to many small desert quails. Within his excellent design, Baker-Finch has included quite large greens, full of all manner of testing slopes and borrows. The perimeter housing aside, this is a Dubai golf course that captures the spirit of desert golf while providing a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging round.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
