Where2Golf says:

Dubai Country Club (Al Awir course): THIS ICONIC DUBAI SAND GOLF COURSE IS NOW CLOSED ...... having made way for the area's expansive Meydan horse-racing development.

Where2Golf.com's earlier description was as follows: While you're in Dubai, why not try a round of golf at the Al Awir sand golf course, and sample golf as it was originally played in this desert habitat, before the arrival of grass courses that is! Sand golf may not be to everyone's liking, but it is remarkable how close to grass golf it comes. What's missing is all that lush green stuff.

On Al Awir the entire game is played on sand, and that means fairways, greens (called browns) and obviously the bunkers. The only green you'll see comes from a sprinkling of trees around the course, and a small astroturf mat that you carry with you for shots from the marked-out fairways. Al Awir may not be as aesthetically easy-on-the-eye as a grass course, but at a very respectable 6477 yards, it's a course that will test your game as fairly and thoroughly as any grass course. The layout contains many well crafted holes, good greenside bunkering, occasional water hazards and browns that have the pace and holding characteristics of normal greens, It may not be golf as you've experienced before, but you may just get to like it!

Other Information
The etiquette of sand golf requires the following: only wear flat-soled shoes (e.g. trainers). Spiked shoes, including soft spikes are not permitted as they damage the greens (called browns). An artificial grass mat is used when playing from a fairway (marked by stakes). The browns must be brushed after putting out, large brushes are provided for this purpose.

Did you know?

Durban Country Club's Al Awir course closed due to the multi-billion dollar mega expansion project of the Meydan horse-racing facilities. It was the oldest golf course in the Emirates, pre-dating the arrival of grass courses by several years. It was also the first course in the Middle East to host overseas golf professionals, when the Caledonian Lions toured here in 1983. It was also the regular venue for the Dubai Men's Open.
