Where2Golf says:

Golf Château de la Tournette (Américain course): There is no doubting the US credentials of the Américain course here at La Tournette. Designed by American architect Bill Amick, the course contains many hallmarks of a challenging US-style parkland layout. The opening holes quickly take you down and into a picturesquely tree-lined "valley" where the first of a memorable collection of par-3s is revealed. In best American tradition, water is a major factor at the par-3s, with all four of them requiring tee-to-green carries over ponds to hit their respective greens. The more open middle part of the course, from the par-5 8th to the par-5 12th, may give you a chance to build your score, providing you can avoid the substantive bunkering. The Américain's challenging closing stretch is launched from the chateau-style clubhouse, with the plunging downhill par-4 15th requiring an accurate tee-shot, before you take on a testing carry over water to the hole's large and sloping green. The same pond must be cleared at the par-3 16th. At the closing par-4 17th and par-5 18th you will need to summon up two of your straightest tee-shots, where accuracy rather than length is most assuredly required. The Américain will certainly test every facet of your game, not least your putting skills; there are few if any flat areas on the restlessly sloping and usually fast-paced greens! Often regarded as the more technical of La Tournette's two courses, the Américain requires plenty of stamina, patience and precision shot-making if you want to play to your handicap, or better it.

Did you know?

The Américain course at La Tournette was designed by Florida-based, US course architect William W. (Bill) Amick. The layout certainly has an American feel, with water-protected par-3s and large, sloping greens. The Américain's sister course at La Tournette, the Anglais, was appropriately enough designed by Englishman Martin Hawtree, and was intended to have a more open linksy feel, akin to a British links-style course.

The Grand Hotel Waterloo is located within easy reach of the centre of Waterloo and just 3 km from one of Europe's most famous battlefields (well worth a visit !). The hotel's main restaurant, La Sucrerie (sugar factory), is particularly noteworthy, not least from an architectural standpoint. Many top-quality courses in the area will keep golfers fully occupied.
