Where2Golf says:

Golf Club de Pierpont: South of Brussels and close to the battlefields of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, several good quality golf courses have sprouted-up in the region's predominantly open undulating farmland. Pierpont, along with the layouts at Hulencourt and Empereur, represent the pick of this new crop.

Gently rolling terrain, a few natural water hazards (starting at the short par-4 1st), skilful earth-mounding and occasional copses of trees give the course its basic shape and definition, ensuring an interesting layout with few weak holes. Pierpont's openness and lack of any real protection from the elements, can conjure up the feel of a seaside links golf course. However, it's undulating arable farmland that you look onto rather than the "in-coming tide, Atlantic waves, slapping sunny cliffs".

The outer front-nine loop, wraps around an inner back-nine loop. There's not too much scenic variation, but that's more than compensated for by the quality of the links-like, easy-draining fairways ... are they built on sand one wonders, rather than the region's more typical heavy clay-soil (which doesn't drain well in the winter months). Add in some shrewd and effective bunkering, and usually excellent quality greens, and you can be sure of a pleasant overall test for your game. An eclectic mix of short holes contains the long and challenging par-3 9th, played downhill to a dangerously water-fronted green, while at the other end of the scale the very short par-3 15th is perhaps the least impressive hole on the course.

The danger at Pierpont is that over-exuberant tree-planting (one or two signs of that emerging) will start to detract from the layout's wonderful linksy openness. Slowly the engaging and distinctive layout could begin to resemble any other of Belgium's modern parkland layouts. Hopefully linksy openness will continue to prevail.

Did you know?

Pierpont's clubhouse is contained within 17th century buildings and was previously surrounded by woodland, on which the course is now located. | In June 1815, just prior to the Battle of Waterloo, this manor-farm was the setting for major skirmishes between sections of the Dutch army (under Wellington's command) and Napolean's French forces. The woods around the farm were cut down and sold by Wellington after the battle (see Pierpont's website for further details).
