Tomson Golf Club, Shanghai Pudong

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.

Where2Golf says:

Tomson Golf Club, Shanghai Pudong is one of the closest golf club's to the centre of Shanghai, and home to one of the area's top-rated courses. This tree-lined and open parkland layout has played host to several top-level tournaments, not least those co-sanctioned with the European Tour.

Good-width rippling fairways are laid out over relatively flat terrain in this park-like environment, with several ponds ensuring that water is in play on several holes. A liberal scattering of small trees, sandy waste areas and large stylish bunkers ensure plenty of challenge on this big dimension modern layout. Around the large and undulating greens you'll discover many grassy humps and hollows, slick run-off areas and an array of bunkers.

As with many of China's best "city" courses, an array of tall apartment blocks are in view beyond parts of the course, while some mansion-like villas sit just beyond the course perimeter. This private course is generally playable only by its members and their guests.

Koksijde Golf ter Hille Golf Club: on what was previously open farmland, an enjoyable and challenging links-style layout has been crafted.
