Pala Mesa Golf Resort

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1961

Pala Mesa Golf Resort: Not far from the former gold and tourmaline mines of Pala, the Pala Mesa Resort is home to a well-presented, scenic and always challenging golf course.

The holes are laid out on the east facing side of a picturesque canyon, where a limited amount of housing sits unobtrusively behind plenty of trees and bushes. Although the Interstate Freeway (I-15) also runs through the canyon, skirting quite close to some of the holes on the South-nine, your undivided attention will be focused on hitting some testingly tight drives, assessing the many elevation changes, and landing on the often small and subtly sloping greens.

The quieter North-nine is less undulating than the South, but maintains the need for straight hitting, while also introducing the only water hazard on the course, alongside the green of the par-5 8th hole. Elsewhere the greens are defended by plenty of stylish, though relatively shallow bunkering.

Beyond the course the surrounding hills provide many scenic views, with avocado groves and fruit orchards much in evidence. Although not overly long, at 6500 yards from the tips, your best chance to score well will depend on accuracy from the tee, with a variety of trees, bushes, flower-beds, steep drop-offs and out-of-bounds awaiting any thing hit offline.

Did you know?

Five miles to the west of Pala Mesa lies the town of Fallbrook; eight miles east is Pala. FALLBROOK, situated just east of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, is known for its avocado groves, claiming the title "Avocado Capital of the World." Arts are the center piece of Fallbrook historic village. The art galleries that line Main Street display the work of over 150 local and nationally known artists. PALA is an Indian Reservation, the community's name coming from the Native American Cupeno or Luiseo term "pal," meaning "water." However, another possible origin of the name is the Spanish word "pala," meaning "shovel." Pala Mesa would then tranlsate as "shovel table." Pala is known for its mineral resources, including gold and tourmaline, with many gem mines established in the 1890s. Some of these mines still produce tourmaline, a crystal silicate mineral, whose gem stones come in a wide variety of colours. In the early 1900s, China's Dowager Empress Cixi of the Qing Dynasty highly prized the pink tourmaline mined in Pala. Under her influence, China's appetite for this gem created a boom in the California tourmaline industry.
