Goswick Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1890

Goswick Golf Club (formerly known as Berwick upon Tweed Golf Club - Goswick Links) is home to a course that lives up to its excellent reputation. For many golfers it exceeds whatever they have read about it. Designer James Braid's masterful touch is clearly evident on this natural and very open seaside links.

The layout comprises two 9-hole loops arranged on either side of the clubhouse. An imposing range of towering sand dunes flanks the east side of the course, while flat farmland and the East Coast mainline railway (London to Edinburgh/Aberdeen) lie inland to the west. There are plenty of views onto the chilly North Sea, mostly gained from several pleasantly elevated tee-boxes.

The excellent revetted bunkering is just as you'd expect on a top-quality British links course, with plenty of pot bunkers mischievously defending the wonderfully true and fast greens.

If you think your game is nicely in tune and you come here ready to overpower the course, just hope it and the wind don't overpower you. All 18 holes provide an excellent test of your golfing skills. A skilful low running bump-and-run game will certainly pay dividends around the greens.

Did you know?

In the past Goswick Golf Club has also gone under the names of Berwick upon Tweed Golf Club, Goswick Links Golf Club and Berwick upon Tweed (Goswick) Golf Club. Suffice to say the tiny village of Goswick lies five miles south of Berwick upon Tweed, where it sits beside an impressive area of sand dunes. The townsfolk of Berwick upon Tweed laid out their golf course here in 1890.
