St Mellion International Resort (Kernow course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1976

St Mellion International Resort (Kernow course): Laid out on top of a hill, although not onerously hilly to play, the Kernow course dates back to the mid 1970's and the beginnings of the St Mellion story. Substantial improvements were made to the course during the 2008 revamp of the resort. This pleasant parkland layout, originally known as the Old Course, provides an easier-going outing than the resort's tougher and newer Nicklaus layout.

The Kernow course offers many scenic views onto surrounding hills and into the the village of St Mellion, complete with its picturesque church. Although the shorter of the two St Mellion layouts, the Kernow still offers a good test of golf and is not without its challenges.

Good quality bunkering continually threatens, while the greens are quick and tricky to putt on. The Kernow makes good use of the terrain's natural soft contours, in contrast to the Nicklaus course where dramatic mounding has been incorporated along the fairways and around the greens.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club
