Montrose Golf Links (1562 course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1562

Montrose Golf Links (1562 course): As the name suggests, golf on this venerable stretch of links land dates back over 450 years to 1562. This may account for the still rugged and challenging feel that characterises Montrose's championship course and shorter par-66 Broomfield course.

As you might expect from one of Scotland's much revered layouts, the 1562 course (formerly known as the Medal course) combines all the essential ingredients of a wonderful seaside gem. Here you will find deep bunkering, springy fast-draining turf, abundant gorse bushes, good-sized sand dunes and greens that are usually terrific to putt on.

The 1562 comprises many excellent golf holes, not least those that run alongside the beach. Don't be surprised if cool North Sea breezes play on your mind, and need to be factored into your yardages. As the Scots hereabouts will tell you, "when it's breezy, swing easy." So, carding a good score at Montrose demands good shot-making and careful course management. But irrespective of the score, Montrose has always been a Scottish seaside links that disappoints the few and delights the many.
