Celtic Manor Resort (Twenty Ten course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1999

Celtic Manor Resort (Twenty Ten course): With the award of the 38th Ryder Cup, Celtic Manor committed to create a course specifically designed for the event. During 2006/07, the former Wentwood Hills layout was dramatically redeveloped. The former steep descent from the old clubhouse down to the River Usk, and an arduous climb back up, were eliminated. Nine existing holes that already lay in the valley floor, were blended into the revised layout with nine new holes. The Twenty Ten was born; "bring on 2010 and the Ryder Cup" was the cry.

The new Twenty Ten layout is now almost entirely located in the picturesque and natural River Usk valley. Four well-bunkered and linksy opening holes should calm the nerves and sharpen up your shot-making. Thereafter you'll be challenged by the layout's water-laden middle section; familiar territory to golfers who played Wentwood Hills. Here good-sized lakes and ponds provide water hazards a plenty. When water is not present, a formidable array of bunkering will likely be lying in wait. The greens are generally large and undulating, well-protected by bunkers and slick run-off areas.

The closing trio of holes, perched above the valley floor, give stunning views across the valley. Occupying a great spot above the par-5 18th, sits the Twenty Ten's new purpose-built clubhouse. From here you can watch players finish their round with another risk-reward opportunity, this time an approach that must fly water directly in front of the green ... in true Ryder Cup style.

Pick of the holes: the par-4 14th (a new hole, and one of six "signature" holes) offers a risky drive over water, then an accurate approach shot is needed to a dangerously water-defended green. Next up the former signature hole on Wentwood Hills. At this short risk-reward par-4 15th, you choose between a safer doglegging route around a copse of trees, or having a tilt at a well-defended green that lies somewhere above you, behind the trees.
