Marriott St Pierre Hotel & CC (Old course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1962

Marriott St Pierre Hotel & CC (Old course): Laid out in relatively open parkland with some lightly wooded sections, the Old Course at St Pierre does an excellent job of combining golf's two vital ingredients. First, it offers a very pleasant environment in which to enjoy "a good walk", and while perambulating around its attractive parkland, the course lays down all manner of golfing challenges to test your game.

Small greens, big bunkers and an excellent standard of upkeep are much in evidence. On the front-nine the early elevated holes afford views onto the Bristol Channel and the two huge Severn estuary bridges. The back-nine contains some of the best and most memorable holes on the course: the 10th, 15th and 17th all providing a potentially watery end for misjudged approach shots to their respective greens.

Pick of the holes: top honours go to the signature hole, the long par-3 18th. This most challenging of closing par-3s is played over water, with the St Pierre hotel and its small chapel-like church giving you a good target line.
