Leven Links Golf Course

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1867

Leven Links Golf Course: Located to the west of Lundin Golf Club, and separated from it by a small stream at Mile Dyke, Leven Links golf course is a busy and popular layout. In prehistoric times, wind and tide combined to produce a series of parallel dune ridges, which now give the links their unique signature. From start to finish you'll notice the fairways run along the valleys between these ancient dunes.

The front-nine loops you counter-clockwise around the course perimeter, the opening few holes running closest to, but not always in sight of, the seashore. At the short and fiercely bunkered par-3 5th, the also short and fiercely bunkered short par-3 5th of Lundin Golf Club is immediately on your right.

Leven's back-nine inner-loop continues its journey between the open, grass-topped ridges, with the often tightish fairways leading you towards good-sized greens. Invariably a gathering of revetted, pot bunkers threaten approach shots into the greens. If you've picked your way between the bunkers, and avoided the out-of-bounds that lies in wait on the right-hand side of a few holes, then try not to let the challenging closing stretch trip you up.

With only occasional sea views, less undulation and more variable upkeep, Leven is sometimes seen as the "poorer relation" to Lundin Links, but don't underestimate Leven's depth of character and the many subtleties of its layout.

Pick of the holes: toughest of all is the long par-4 18th; its green is only reached once you've crossed the deep and wide Scoonie Burn, which loops around the front and right side of this prodigiously sloping putting surface.

Did you know?

Leven (said "Leeven") is home to the 11th oldest golf club in the world, The Leven Golfing Society. The Leven course originally comprised nine holes, which were extended to 18 in 1868 by adding nine more to the east of Mile Dyke (a small stream). The new course, the "Innerleven Links", now connected the towns of Leven and Lundin Links.

With the Leven players starting at the western end of the course and Lundin players at the eastern end, and with golf growing in popularity through the 1890s, the inevitable result was a heavily congested course.

In 1907 the decision was taken to create two separate 18-hole courses, from the original 18-hole "Innerleven" layout. The original nine holes that lay west of Mile Dyke were extended inland to create the 18-hole Leven course (still home to the Leven Golfing Society and Leven Thistle GC). The more dramatic easterly nine was also extended inland, forming today's 18-hole Lundin Links.
