Shiskine Golf & Tennis Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1896

Shiskine Golf & Tennis Club: Known to many as the best 12-hole golf course in the UK, Shiskine's ocean-side setting, nestling below the Drumadoon Cliffs, ensures it is right up there with the scenic best. It might also be a contender for having the highest ratio of blind shots to make, both from the tees and for approach shots to the greens. Various signalling devices are employed at some holes to let you know when its safe to play.

The undulating terrain has all the hallmarks of an excellent links style golf course, with fabulous sea views over Kilbrannan Bay and across to the Mull of Kintyre. The greens are well-paced and a couple of burns meander snake-like across the layout. Perhaps the UK's most famous 12-hole course, and well worth a visit.

Alexander Boyd, a banker based in Glasgow, is credited as the founder of the club. In June 1896 the club was opened by the then Lord Advocate, Mr Graham Murray. The course architect was Willie Fernie of Troon, who designed the original nine-hole course. Currently the 5th and 9th are the only surviving holes from the original layout.
