Downfield Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1932

Downfield Golf Club: Located in the north-western suburbs of Dundee, and just a short distance from the seaside golf courses of St Andrews and Carnoustie, Downfield is a real gem. Often overlooked by visitors to Scotland’s east coast, this tree-lined, parkland layout deserves a place on every visiting golfer’s itinerary.

The holes at Downfield are attractively laid out over relatively flat terrain. The picturesque woodland scenery is accompanied by plenty of golfing challenge along the way. On most occasions there is sufficient room here to use driver from the tees, but beware the excellent bunkering and small water ditches, which cross some fairways. The excellent greens are large enough to give a reasonable target area for your approach shots.

With top-quality greenkeeping and a wonderful woodland setting, Downfield routinely delivers a thoroughly enjoyable golf outing. Here in the northwest of Dundee, you'll find something very different from the seaside links courses that inevitably dominate golf in this part of Scotland.

Did you know?

Golf in the village of Downfield was originally played on the nine-nine hole 'Baldovan' course; an old horse-drawn tramcar providing the basic clubhouse facilities. During World War I the course returned to agricultural use, and only in 1932 were moves made to resurrect the golf club.

The resulting course was designed by James Braid, but in 1964 required alteration to make way for local housing. Some of the Braid-designed holes, with their original bunkering are still in play.

In 1999 Downfield was selected as a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship held at Carnoustie. Paul Lawrie, one of the qualifiers from Downfield, went on to lift the Claret Jug.

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
