Sun City Resort (Lost City Country Club course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1993

Sun City Resort (Lost City Country Club course): Sitting on the edge of the Pilanesberg National Park, the Lost City course expansively roams through a wonderfully natural and undulating bushveld environment. With the fabulous Palace of the Lost City looking down on proceedings, this is yet another Gary Player gem to savour.

Occupying the site of a long extinct volcano, this desert-style course has a more open and (at times) easier-going feel than its more famous Sun City stablemate, the Gary Player Country Club course. Sprawling sandy waste areas are to be found alongside many fairways, while large, deep bunkers provide serious defences around the greens.

Water hazards need to be crossed at the par-3 3rd and 15th holes, and a multi-tiered water feature flanks the fairways and greens at the par-4 9th and par-5 18th. Most famous and dangerous of all Lost City's hazards is a crocodile pit (complete with 2-metre long crocs) guarding the front of the spectacular downhill par-3 13th. If your tee shot to the "Africa" shaped green is short and right, then don't even think about climbing into the pit to recover your golf ball - you'll not come out in one piece.

With the two nine-hole loops making excellent use of the rugged and undulating terrain, you'll enjoy many wonderful views from the layout's higher elevations. Far from playing "second-fiddle" to its more renowned sibling, the Lost City layout also offers a thoroughly enjoyable and testing round in a sublimely natural setting. If you are planning a trip to Sun City, try to plan enough time to play both the "Gary Player" and the "Lost City" courses ... and lose yourself in this unique and unforgettable 36-hole offering.
