Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club (East course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1927

Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club (East course): Set in 1,000 acres of picturesque parkland (formerly part of the estate of the Earl of Morton), Dalmahoy boasts two 18-hole golf courses, the championship East and shorter West. Onsite accommodation is plentiful, some of it located in an 18th century baronial manor house.

The East course, the more senior of the two, has staged several top-quality professional events. Played over gently undulating terrain, the fairways here could hardly be described as heavily tree-lined, although mature trees are liberally scattered. The trees and accompanying rough provide good definition to the holes, especially the long par-4s that lay down a serious challenge to most golfers. The short holes are well bunkered, and the 17th, known as Wee Wrecker, is aptly named - a good test requiring accurate iron play.

An excellent complement to its bigger brother, the West Course has a variety of challenging holes that will test your accuracy from the tee, as well as your short game around the greens. Ideal for beginners or people who only play occasionally, the West Course can be shortened to just 9 or 13 holes, as the course winds its way past the Hotel.
