Orchardleigh Golf Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1995

Orchardleigh Golf Club: In an area of quiet rural countryside, not too far from the stunning city of Bath and the historic towns of Frome and Warminster, this quintessentially English parkland golf course is laid out in the grounds of the beautiful Orchardleigh Estate. Brian Huggett's well designed and well maintained layout provides an enjoyable golfing challenge for players of all abilities.

The front-nine loop of holes occupies flatter and more open terrain to the west of the clubhouse, while the back-nine loop has the greater elevation changes and a slightly more tree-lined feel, especially as you approach the finish.

There are plenty of smooth, elliptical bunkers along the fairways and guarding most of the greens. Three small ponds on the front-nine and another alongside the 18th green will also ensure you stay focused and apply good course management during your round.

In these pleasant parkland surroundings, Orchardleigh House can be seen on your left as you play the excellent par-4 1st, while many fine rural views can be enjoyed, especially from the higher elevations on the back-nine. Look out at the plunging par-5 12th hole for the white horse carved onto a distant hill - a reminder of the fascinating ancient history that is all around you in this part of England's wonderful West Country.

Did you know?

The Orchardleigh Estate is centred around a magnificent stately house built in 1856 by Thomas Henry Wyatt for William Duckworth. In 1986 the last male Duckworth descendant died, and work started on redeveloping the house. Although the initial development was stalled for some years, work on the current house (a popular wedding venue) and the golf course resumed and was completed by the mid-1990s.

The course you play at Orchardleigh was known for some time as the Park Course. Orchardleigh's original plan envisaged two 18-hole courses; the second was marked out to the south of the existing course, but has not yet been built.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
