From Galway take the N17 north direction Sligo. In Claremorris follow N60 direction Castlebar. In Castlebar follow N5 direction Westport. From Westport follow N59 direction Newport and after 2.7 km turn left direction Carraholly. After 2.6 km golf is on your left. Allow 1.5 - 2 hours drive time from Galway.
Although Westport Golf Club was established in 1908, the course itself dates from 1973, which explains the "new feel" particularly on the front-nine. In fact the first 10 holes are played in open parkland with small copses of fir trees still a few years from full maturity. The large greens contrast with the rather small bunkers, while water hazards start coming into play from the par-5 7th.
The course really comes into its own on the back-nine when the holes themselves become more interesting and the views onto Westport Bay are what you would expect from a course on the west coast of Ireland (although the vistas are more estuary-like than full-blooded Atlantic Ocean). Ireland's holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, and the wonderful ridge of hills leading to it are an ever-present sight, weather permitting.
Pick of the holes: the par-5 15th is rightly the most celebrated hole on the course - simply stunning, especially at high tide.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
