Galway Bay Golf Resort

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1993

Galway Bay Golf Resort: Located on the wonderfully scenic Renville peninsula, across the bay from the city of Galway, the Galway Bay Golf Resort previously offered an excellent Stay&Play opportunity on Ireland's west coast. Although the onsite hotel closed in 2007 (pending a relaunch at a future date), the Christy O'Connor golf course remains very much open for play.

O'Connor's skilfully crafted design effortlessly blends into its immensely scenic surroundings. Galway Bay remains prominently in view throughout, with several holes routed directly alongside the Bay's shoreline. Rather than natural sand dunes, the layout benefits from well shaped mounding, producing easy-going undulations and an open links-style character. From both the front and back nines, which wrap around the end of the peninsula, the Bay is constantly in view.

On several holes anything hit too far right off the tee may come to a watery end in the Bay. In addition, three or four good-size ponds in the middle of the course might also create a splash. An abundance of partly-concealed crater-shaped bunkers will also command your attention, and further emphasise the need for good quality shot-making.

The Renville peninsula is an inspiring location of great natural beauty and tranquillity. However, if the wind is coming in hard from the Atlantic, it can take on a fiercer demeanour, adding to the golfing challenges this enjoyable course lays down.
