Palmetto Hall Plantation (Robert Cupp course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1993

Palmetto Hall Plantation (Robert Cupp course): located just northwest of Hilton Head island Airport, Palmetta Hall is one of Hilton Head's best known golfing venues. It offers two 18-hole championship layouts, in the guise of the Arthur Hills and Robert Cupp courses.

Some of Robert Cupp's original design concepts here, featuring sharp lines and angles, and symmetrical forms, have mellowed with time. But for this computer-aided design layout, it still offers something a bit different from the norm. The pyramid-shaped mounding, geometric bunkering and straight-edged water hazards are special in their own way, as is the good mix of holes with water and those without.

The course offers a good golfing challenge, although it can feel a tad more open than its tougher sister-course at Palmetto Hall Plantation (the Arthur Hills course). Like its sibling, the Cupp course is well-maintained as it meanders through a predominantly natural woodland/marshland environment. Beyond the Cupp course to the northeast lies another course in the Heritage Golf Collection ... Oyster Reef.
