Old Thorns Golf & Country Estate

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1981

Old Thorns Golf & Country Estate: Located close to the Surrey-Hampshire border, in a picturesque area of woodland and heathland, Old Thorns has long been a favourite with golfers from near and far. From the layout's higher elevations, which involve one or two stiffish climbs on your way round, you are treated to magnificent views over the surrounding wooded countryside of North Hampshire.

The opening par-4 and par-5 on this enjoyable and testing layout, provide an early indication that dog-legging holes will play an integral part in proceedings. Tightish fairways reinforce the requirement for accurate, straight-hitting if a good score is to be carded.

Alongside the tighter more wooded stretches, the course also contains several pleasantly open stretches, where the presence of small lakes and occasional out-of-bounds will maintain the accent on accuracy versus length during your round.

Pick of the holes: perhaps the most daunting of the tee-shots comes at the most spectacular of the holes. The plunging short par-4 5th needs no more than an iron from the tee, to set up an approach over water to a small green that nestles amongst the trees. Another testing tee-shot from a scenic elevated tee comes at the excellent par-5 17th.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
