Wildfire Golf Club (Palmer course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1997

JW Marriott's Wildfire Golf Club is an excellent quality public-access facility, which boasts two, pleasantly contrasting and picturesque 18-hole layouts. Both the Faldo and Palmer courses lay down an excellent test of golf, each one handsomely crafted by the respective golfing legend whose name it bears.

The Palmer Signature Course plays up to 7,145 yards, providing a desert-style golf experience. The Palmer layout has a different feel than the adjoining Faldo course, but you'll spark plenty of debate if you ask the members which is the better of the two.

The Palmer is perhaps a little more challenging with some tighter drives to be made and "wash" areas cutting across several fairways. Errant drives often find the penal scrub which typically lines the fairways, not least on holes like the testing par-5 14th, never an easy proposition even if you know the course. In contrast the Faldo creates a slightly more forgiving feel, although it does possess the more prodigious bunkering.

The greens on the Palmer are notoriously large and undulating, playing as well and as true as any you'll find in the Scottsdale area. Housing typically only flanks one-side of the holes on the Palmer, and is generally set-well back out of harm's way. Gratifyingly, the "turn" on each of the nine-hole loops pushes out into the open desert, offering the best of the McDowell Mountain views.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
