Fairmont St Andrews (Kittocks Course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2002

Fairmont St Andrews (Kittocks Course): Since its creation in 2002, the Kittocks course (originally known as The Devlin) has captivated and challenged visiting golfers. Laid out on a natural, unspoilt tract of undulating terrain, the course skirts alongside the tree-lined cutting of Kittocks Den and takes you out onto the cliffs' edge. From many parts of the course you will enjoy captivating sea and coastal views.

As of 2008, the Kittocks also acquired a new sting in its tail, with the frighteningly long par-4 17th and 18th holes (which used to be the 17th and 16th respectively of the Torrance course). These tough par-4s provide as formidable a finish as you could wish for ... and one of them will be "wind against". The first five holes are tricky enough, with water significantly in play on the doglegging par-4 2nd and Kittocks Den to be crossed in front of the green at the par-4 4th. (You'll cross it again with your drive at the straight and handsomely bunkered par-4 12th).

The fabulous par-4 7th drops you down to the shoreline, and onto a huge double green which is shared with the par-4 10th hole. This stretch from the 7th through to the long, challenging uphill par-5 11th is an immensely scenic and beautifully crafted collection of cliff-top holes.

With the city of St Andrews often in view to the west and Carnoustie (and its companion courses in Angus) away across St Andrews Bay to the north, you visual senses as well as your golfing brain will be fully occupied here on Fairmont St Andrews' dramatic and wonderfully challenging Kittocks course.

Did you know?

The Kittocks course (originally known as The Devlin) takes its name from Kittocks Den, a tree-filled cutting that borders the leftside of the 5th hole and rightside of the 14th, and which you play across at the 4th and 12th holes. Kittocks Den is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is home to pheasants, rabbits and hares, deer, grouse and badgers.

The 15th green on the Kittocks course sits above the site of a 2000-year old Iron Age fort/look-out station.
