Concord Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1899

Concord Golf Club: An immaculate clubhouse ringed by beautifully tended gardens, signals your arrival at one of Sydney's oldest and most prestigious golf clubs. This quintessential tree-lined parkland layout provides a stress-free golfing oasis, far removed from the hubbub of the city beyond.

Laid out on ground that gently slopes away from the clubhouse, the course bears the distinction of being recently renovated by Tom Doak. There is no real rough to speak of at Concord, but an array of majestic trees (with eucalyptus to the fore), good quality bunkering and excellent greens will certainly challenge your full shot-making repertoire.

The early holes follow the course perimeter, with a touch of light traffic noise in attendance early-on. As you get further into your round the outside world soon melts away, allowing Concord's abundant charms to unfold. Amongst many classic holes, the par-5 8th demands a drive up and over a ridge, followed by a descent to the green below through an ever-tightening avenue of trees; two greenside bunkers provide the final defence on this wonderfully stylish hole.

On the back-nine loop, take care at the par-4 17th, where your approach is threatened by a pond, one of only a few water hazards in play. The stylishly bunkered par-4 18th rises back up to the elegant clubhouse, where you can again admire the horticultural skills of the club's greenkeepers ( ... and gardeners).

Concord GC was originally part of the Sydney GC (later Royal Sydney). Some of Sydney GC's members set up on their own in 1898, when Sydney GC relinquished its course in Concord West and moved to Bondi sandhills near Rose Bay. Since those early days Concord has hosted many top level competitions including the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Women's Open (see Tournaments section >by Venue >Concord).
