Cypress Lakes Golf & Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1992

Two things are immediately apparent here at Cypress Lakes Resort. First, you are located in the middle of the wide and wonderful Hunter Valley. Second, this is most definitely wine country.

As your attention turns to the golf course, you'll find the open and expansive front-nine takes you on a sweeping tour around two small lakes, and up and down some not insignificant undulations. En route you will also rub shoulders with one or two local wineries.

The back-nine continues the undulating theme, introducing more noticeably tree-lined holes, while also opening up some spectacular views across the valley. The short par-3 11th, played to a pudding-basin green and the slightly quirky par-4 12th are two of the most memorable holes. One of the most challenging tee-shots you'll face comes at the long 603-metre par-5 16th, where a precise draw (up a hill!) is needed to get the ball in play.

Throughout, there is plentiful and quite deep bunkering around the greens. The generally good quality fairways are amply wide, although the grass struggles to grow much beyond them (although grapes fair better!). From start to finish this is an always interesting layout, with many vantage points providing great Hunter Valley and Brokenback mountain views.

Did you know?

The Hunter Valley was home to some of the earliest wine production in Australia in the 1830s, but the real boom period came in the 1970s. Now there are approximately 100 wineries in the Hunter Valley, and many of them within a stone's throw of Cypress Lakes.
