St Michael's Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1938

St Michael's Golf Club: Small trees and bushes line the fairways on the first few holes and the distinctly undulating terrain may have you thinking this will be a hilly, tree-lined experience. Not so. At the 6th hole you emerge into a very linksy and flatter environment, with the open terrain allowing many glorious views onto the Pacific Ocean and the wonderful cliffs that make up this coastline.

Much of the rest of the course seems to alternate between an open, links environment, while at other holes small trees and bushes come back into the reckoning.

The best run of holes starts with the sharply dog-legging par-4 11th (a blind drive makes it tough the first time you play it), then onto the beautifully bunkered par-3 12th, followed by the 13th, a short par-5 that starts from an elevated tee, squeezes through a relatively tight fairway, and finishes at a green just above the wave pounded rocks.

The overall quality of upkeep, especially on and around the greens, is generally good, although beyond the fairways the condition can become a tad rustic.

Two other golf courses are clearly in view from St Michael's, New South Wales from a couple of the early holes, and The Coast GC from several later holes. All in all, St Michael's is a very natural and wonderfully scenic course - well worth a visit.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
