The Australian Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1882

The Australian Golf Club is home to one of Sydney's most exclusive, prestigious and top-flight layouts. The course is masterfully designed to give your game (and that of tour professionals) a thorough workout in every department ... you can thank Jack Nicklaus's significant course improvements for that.

From the tee boxes, many of them elevated, you get a good look at the hazards ahead and what's needed to avoid them. Trees play their part here, although there are several open stretches of the course, threateningly festooned with stylish bunkering. Water hazards also come dangerously into play on many holes, not least at the terrific par-5 18th.

The generally good-width fairways lead you towards strongly bunker-defended greens. On many occasions only a high lofted shot over the front bunkers will bring you safely onto the putting surface. Miss these flattish, well-paced greens and you'll probably be digging your ball out of a bunker or inch high first-cut.

There are no weak holes on The Australian, each one presents a good test in its own right. A few holes on the back-nine run close to the somewhat noisy Southern Cross Drive (Hwy 1 out of the City), but that shouldn't distract you unduly. Without doubt a course (and clubhouse) in the highest echelons of Australian golf.

Did you know?

The Australian lays strong claim to being the country's oldest golf club. Formed in 1882 it has remained in existence since that time, although golf was not included in the club's activities for seven years (1888-95). Royal Melbourne (founded in 1891) therefore lays claim to being the oldest continuously functioning golf club in Australia.

The Australian regularly hosts top national and regional tournaments, including the Australian Open and Australian PGA championships (see our Tournaments section >by venue >Australian).

On the par-5 5th hole there is a plaque 236 metres from the green celebrating the albatross "two" made by Greg Norman when he hit a 3-wood into the hole during the 1990 Australian Open. The Australian was the Sydney-based home club of former Australian business magnate, Kerry Packer.

Published ranking

Australia's 26th best course (Australian Golf Digest, 2022/23).
World's former 96th best course (GOLF Magazine, 1991; not in subsequent editions of this ranking).
