The Lakes Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1928

The Lakes Golf Club: Water hazards, as the club's name implies, are a major feature of this layout. The par-4 1st hole brings you into contact (hopefully not too closely!) with the first of many lakeside holes.

Much of the front-nine provides a respite from "lakeside" golf as the course crosses under Southern Cross Drive to the par-5 2nd hole and enters a pleasant, tree-lined, gently undulating environment. Although traffic noise from the highway is noticeable at first, it shouldn't get in the way of you enjoying one of Sydney's best known golf clubs and most challenging layouts.

The tree-lined fairways of the front nine, give way to lake-lined fairways on the flatter but very testing back-nine. Beyond the fairways, much of the back-nine is dominated by a large lake with various inlets and plenty of marshland hugging the holes. Accuracy rather than length will often pay dividends around these lakeside holes, unless you want to donate a ball or two to the multitude of birdlife that inhabit the lakes.

Throughout, the excellent and large greens (opulently large at times) will give your putter a good work-out, while your sand-wedge may not be needed quite so much, with many holes not overly bunkered.

Did you know?

In very close proximity to The Lakes GC, you will find the Jack Nicklaus layout of the The Australian GC to the north, the renowned Bonnie Doon GC to the east, and to the south and east (across the lakes) the Eastlake Golf Club. The latter was part of the 36-holes that, at one time, made up The Lakes Golf Club. In 1959 Eastlake became a separate public golf course in its own right.

The Lakes has hosted many top national and regional tournaments including the Australian Open, Australian PGA, Johnnie Walker Classic, Greg Norman Holden Classic and the ANZ Players Championship (see Tournaments section >by Venue).
